Luxury Golf Collection Blog

Welcome to the Luxury Golf Collection. I am Ian Hugglestone the owner of the Luxury collection. The vast majority of these venues I have tried and tested and most of the courses have torn me up and thrown me away!
But of course it has been a delight and I have got some great deals for you, so check out my blog and see what a tough time I am having testing these venues for you !

Rosapenna Hotel and Golf Resort, Donegal, Ireland

When we visited this venue last year I was at an advantage over my fellow Luxury Golfer Alex as I had played it before. We came back here and why you ask ? Well I rang Alex in August of 2012 and told him that I had just played a course that blew my socks off ? Where he asked ?

Sandy Hills at Rosapenna I told him.

Im writing this blog now and am thinking how do you describe it ?

Wow, Brillant, Testing, all of these words don’t do it justice.

So Ill try harder for you to set the scene…or look at my own photos of the day we spent there.

Its hard, fair and breathtaking on a summers day and solid if you don’t drive it straight. The rough is hard as nails and the bunkers, well let’s just say don’t just don’t go in them. And the best thing is that it is utterly brilliant.

When Pat Ruddy built this he did himself proud, it is just sublime.

I have been lucky enough to play some great golf courses in my time in Scotland and abroad but this is in my top 5. It’s that good. The views, the greens, the outlook from the tees is just stunning and the course makes you play proper thoughtful golf.

You need to visit here soon.

Ian

Ps. The Old Tom Morris course which is also onsite is also a great links track, flatter, not as hard but the back nine runs along the coast and has some very good holes.

Lets start here then…

http://www.luxurygolfcollection.co.uk/castle-stuart-inverness-short-break

Castle Stuart host to this years Scottish open after hosting also the last two.  ’ Undeniably brilliant and the fairest test of links I have ever played-Ian.May 2013.’ It’s just a great great proper links track, with fairways that allow you to go for it with driver but greens that require thought, skill and a links mentality ( put away the wedge and play the rolling up 8 iron ).

Where next ? How about up to Dornoch just 50 mins away in a car.

http://www.luxurygolfcollection.co.uk/royal-dornoch-4-day-5-rounds

Stay here at The Royal Golf Hotel about ten yards from first tee of the championship course at Dornoch, great food, better service and refurbished rooms to suit all. Cracking fire and good beer and whisky selection, bliss.

After that there are the delights of Brora, Tain, Boat O’Garden or Spey Valley. This area has an abundance of great golf to experience and enjoy. Why not call us today to discuss where to go and play and where to stay, with our experience in the area and location we can ensure your trip will be as required. 08000 588 988.

Carne Golf Club, County Mayo, North West Ireland

Want to play one of the most picturesque golf courses in Ireland  ? Tee times in high Summer in Ireland for an totally unbelievable £55. Yes championship links golf for £55 in a location that will blow away any reservations about the quality of Irish golf.

luxurygolfcollection had the pleasure of visiting Carne Golf Club in May and we fell in love with the course and its many qualities. It tests both length and accuracy off the tee and has firm, fair greens that deserve respect.

The dunes are some of the biggest and the best you will encounter in Ireland when you play golf at Carne golf club in County Mayo. We arrived and were assured that the 2/3 club wind we would encounter that day was just a nice fair lazy breeze, when I asked why it was lazy, I was told ‘Its lazy as it wont blow around you…It cuts through you !’  We couldn’t care less as the golf was some of the best we have encountered in the Emerald Isle. As an average to high handicapper I was happy that there weren’t that many blind tee shots and visually you can see nearly all of the hole in front of you from the tee. And boy oh boy are the greens true !

luxurygolfcollection are happy to present Carne as a fantastic golf opportunity but why would you want to miss out on some other fantastic courses in Mayo and Sligo when the golf is so good. Don’t just play here why not try Westport, Enniscrone , Bundoran and County Sligo or even Murvagh links. With some brilliant accommodation available there is no excuse any longer. Mount Falcon hotel and spa  is our suggested location due to its central location to all the best golf courses. In Carne itself the Talbot hotel and the Icehouse hotel are also well recommended.

We have various offers throughout the year and can build you a package that suits you best for your perfect Irish golf break away. If you would like us to arrange various hotels at various locations then so be it, we are happy as long as you are. That is one of the many benefits of booking with luxurygolfcollection, we only book what you would like, our aim is to provide you with all the information and local knowledge that you need to make the decision that best suits you.

The company engaged Eddie Hackett a well known Irish golf links designer to lay out the 18 holes and Carne Golf Links was the last links course to be designed by Him. The link below has an interview with him describing his thoughts on the design.

To wet the appetite for what you will see when you play the course here is one of Eddie Hackett’s quotes about the course.

“It took nature thousands of years to create this, we must not let the bulldozers destroy it.”

Interview with Eddie Hackett about Carne

The first nine was opened in 1992. Play began on the second nine in 1993 and the clubhouse was completed in 1995. Carne Golf Links has gone on to become one of the premium links golf courses in Ireland and is a true gem in North Mayo. It has been voted 7th in the top 100 golf courses in the UK & Ireland previously.

Carne have over the last few years been developing their latest 9 holes to enable 27 holes to be played in a day.

West Coast of Scotland Golfing

The Dundonald course is situated on the other side of the railway track from Western Gailes golf course so as you can imagine is one a prime piece of golfing real estate. This course has weathered the West side of Scotland rain and wind and is maturing into a beautiful 18 to play. Whenever I’ve visited the course you never feel that you have mastered it, now this may be down to my swing or it may be as it’s a proper test of golf. With views to behold and holes to try to par and get out of town from quickly this is a really enjoyable track to play.

I always just want to go out straight away.

Dundonald Links the 2nd

b2ap3_thumbnail_dundonald-resize-2nd-Hole.jpg

I have hit a driver at the par 3 on the front nine and seen it land 5ft from the pin and roll back 25 ft, and the next time hit an 8 iron at the same hole, this course is not tricked up but you need to engage your brain, maybe that’s the reason I’ve struggled ?

The golf in and around this location is highly rated and with an open venue less than 25 minutes away it gains a fair few travelling parties. However if you choose to go to this neck of the woods without playing either of these courses you are being robbed, honestly they are very good.

b2ap3_thumbnail_dundoanld-9th-hole-resize.jpg

The opportunity to play them is coupled with great teams at the venues who welcome you and provide great service and fantastic food at sensible prices. They work very hard at trying to ensure you have a great time and want to return.

Your Parkland Course. Rowallan Castle.

b2ap3_thumbnail_rowallan-castle-2.jpg

The Rowallan Parkland Course is a host venue for the euro-pro tour and we have chosen to work with them and promote the course as it is great value, it has a good location for guys who fly into or out of Glasgow and provides flexibility for the first or last 18 on a trip but also as it will one day become a must play in this area. The photos don’t do it justice I’m afraid but having been there last September I have seen for myself what a great course it is.

b2ap3_thumbnail_rowallan-3.jpg

The cost of the trip per person is £200 pp for 2 rounds of golf and bed and breakfast in the hotel at either venue.

Close House Hotel and Golf Course

I played Close house just 15 minutes from Newcastle in April of this year and was struck at how good the greens were for a county that was covered in snow fror vast amounts of the beginning of 2013. Heavy snow however was never going to stop this green team and the benefits are there for all to see. However the courses ( yes Close House has two 18's.) are not the only benefit of taking a trip with us to Close House. This venue has undergone a transformation over the last few years and is aiming to look at being the go to place for the North East as a golfing venue, it is not far from being close ( no pun intended) to that objective. The main house where the bar, restaurant and original bedrooms are situated is luxurious and welcoming. The food is fantastic, full of flavours, and the bar is well stocked. Anywhere that has Birra Morretti on draught is always going to rate highly with me. If like me you are lucky you will be given a room in the former stable quarter where all the rooms are named after Ryder Cup venues. I stayed in a deluxe room ( dont worry every room is deluxe !!) and after travelling all day did make use of the roll top bath. With Tv's that push out of the wall and disapeer when required and free wifi etc etc there is all you need to keep in touch with anybody should you require. I didnt bother with any of that as I was too busy either playing golf or watching sport in the 19th hole bar where thefood was equally as good as that served in the main restaurant.

 So to the courses.

We played the main 18 hole course 'The Colt' and all we can say is how happy it made us !

The fairways were fair not huge, but fair. If you went off to either side the rough was manageable, not sure how it would play in summer mind ?  The greens were fantastic for this time of year. Very responsive and true without any tricked up messing about. Pace plays it part but master that and you can score. My friend from Sweden hates hidden greens and says its not fair if you can't see the flag from any part of the fairway, he would be happy here as everything is there right in front of you. When you cross the road and play the second part of the front nine the course starts to test your metal. A big hit is required uphill and a true struck iron onto the green will then be required but that green is so inviting you just have to go for it. When you play the hole downhill opposite you ( 2 holes later) you wont be able to resist smashing it straight down the middle either, I didnt and was rewarded with a birdie ! The par 3 over the lake next messes with your mind over club selection, whatever you do dont go long and hit the trees, watch the ball drop onto the wall and then bounce back onto the green and run back to the flag 4 feet short. It may well raise an eyebrow from a playing partner ! After the par3 you then cross the road again and play the majority of the back nine and this holds some fabulous holes to play. One of my favourite holes on the back nine was the 16th a great drive demanded and a subtle iron then required to ensure you get your four.

Overall the course was in brillant condition and it has some beautiful positioned holes and it is a test. I don't think you can fail to be impressed with the standard of the course, the hotel and most importantly the service from the staff. I cant wait to go back and play it again.

Ian played Close House in April 2013.
